J B Harley's account, already cited, is an excellent short introduction. Chapman J, and Seeliger, S, 2001, Enclosure, Environment and Landscape in Southern England, Stroud: Tempus, is not only a very useful regional study, but also contains an excellent, up to date review of the parliamentary enclosure process, 9-48. Those unfamiliar with these sources should read this account before even attempting to tackle any enclosure records in which they may be interested. However, the definitive source is now Kain, R J P, Chapman J, and Oliver R R, 2004, The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, which as well as a comprehensive survey of the historical background of parliamentary enclosure, presents lists of all known surviving enclosure records. This is probably the most accessible point of first resort for anyone wishing to check for the existence of an enclosure map for a particular area.
