The best short introduction to the tithe surveys is Kain, R J P, and Prince, H C, 2000, Tithe Surveys for Historians, Chichester, Phillimore. The same authors have, however, also produced far more extensive and detailed studies, including listings of every surviving tithe survey: see Kain and Prince, 1985, The Tithe Surveys of England and Wales, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; and Kain and R R Oliver, 1995, The Tithe Maps of England and Wales, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. An extremely useful, brief overview of the surveys can also be found in Beech G, and Mitchell R, 2004, Maps for Family and Local History, London: Public Record Office. J B Harley's account of tithe, estate and enclosure maps (the three categories most likely to contain field-name information) also remains highly informative - see n.15
