CITING WIKIARC

WikiArc is designed to be useful reference tool, and although it is primarily intended to introduce broad subject areas and provide a starting point for further research, it may be that you wish to refer to text on the site. For academic use, citation of WikiArc may not always be deemed suitable by editors or teaching staff; and, as with all private websites, it is not recommended to cite WikiArc without corroboration from another source. WikiArc is designed, however, as a closed wiki, meaning that all the text is created by users who are experienced in their field, and other registered members are asked to review new articles to ensure reliabilty.
A wiki is an unusual source of information in terms of referencing. It is not paper, and so content drawn from it should be referenced as an electronic document. Furthermore, it is not stable, as pages may be revised by registered members at any time. With that in mind, best citation practice should include the page version (found towards the bottom of the page, below the text)
A suggested form for citation is:
Author(s), Date: Article Title (version number), in WikiArc, The Wiki Archaeological Information Resource, <page url> [date accessed]
For example
McFarlane, S., 2008: Collectors vs. Museums (page version 5), in WikiArc, The Wiki Archaeological Information Resource, <http://www.wikiarc.org/CollectorsvsMuseums> [accessed 19th April 2008]
Although WikiArc only displays the most recent page version, text of stable versions is available on request.
